The representative of Nineveh Governorate, Nayef Al-Shammari, said that there must be a retrial for thousands of detainees sentenced on terrorism charges. Al-Shammari continued in a statement, a copy of which was received by Mosul Time Radio, saying, “After the operations to liberate Nineveh Governorate from the clutches of the terrorist organization ISIS, thousands of people from Nineveh Governorate were arrested, and a large portion of the detainees had confessions extracted from them through coercion and torture, and the judge is a prisoner of paper. These confessions were extracted by Some officers in the Nineveh Intelligence and Counter-Terrorism Directorate from 2017 to 2019 were suspected of corruption and bad behavior.” Al-Shammari called for a re-investigation, considering that this is fairness and justice, stressing that the Nineveh Intelligence and Counter-Terrorism Directorate has a Fugitive Division, which is responsible for all organization documents for members of the terrorist ISIS organization. He stated that the investigation could be re-investigated, and that whoever has a document proven against him in this branch is considered a terrorist and must receive the most severe penalties. As for those against whom no document has been proven, fair investigating officers must be allocated and a field survey should be conducted against him, indicating that this step will prove the guilt of the accused rather than his innocence. Al-Shammari concluded by stressing that the retrial is a historic national demand against innocent people, and that this step does not aim to release ISIS criminals who have wreaked havoc on earth, but that does not mean arresting and trying innocent people who have no connection to the organization.
