The head of the Strategic Center for Human Rights, Fadel Al-Gharawi , reported yesterday , Tuesday, that Baghdad Governorate ranked first in the housing units deficit index compared to the proportion of population, at 31 %, followed by Nineveh Governorate, at 28%, and Basra Governorate, third, at 10 % .
Al-Gharawi stated in a report published by the center that the percentage of housing deficit in housing units for the years 2023 and 2024 reached 26% of the total population of Iraq, which numbers 45 million, according to statistics from the Ministry of Planning .
He added that the home ownership rate in Iraq is about 74 % , meaning that 26 % , or more than a quarter of Iraqis, live in rent or in random units .
Al-Gharawi also indicated that the percentage of need for housing units in urban areas will increase by 3% annually until the year 2030, and according to this indicator, Iraq needs 4 million housing units by the year 2027 .
The President of the Central Bank called on the government to launch the National Housing Initiative, distribute residential plots of land in all governorates, along with the interest-free housing loan initiative, and establish residential cities to address the large deficit in the percentage of housing units .
