The Ministry of Justice confirmed The rate of overcrowding in prisons decreased to 100% by the end of next year, while it announced the opening of new correctional departments at the end of this year and the middle of next year .
Ministry spokesman Ahmed Laibi said “The Minister of Justice directed, within the government program, the rehabilitation of prisons and the elimination of the overcrowding rate, which reached 300 %.
Laibi explained, “The directive included the rehabilitation of correctional departments that include the largest number of inmates and the establishment of new correctional departments in the governorates of Baghdad, Nineveh, and Basra, as well as Babylon and Wasit,” noting that “some of these departments will open at the end of this year and others in the middle of next year .”
He added, “By the end of next year, the overcrowding rate in prisons will decrease to 100 % ,” stressing that “Abu Ghraib Prison (Baghdad Central Prison) has been rehabilitated, in addition to the Ministry’s intention at the end of this year to open the Amara Central Prison .”
He continued, “Many correctional departments will be rehabilitated and expanded, including the municipal prison and the Khan .”
