After the great controversy that arose on social media in Mosul as a result of several collapses in some roads in Nineveh Governorate and the city of Mosul, road expert Engineer Zaid Al-Saffar said that the collapses are known geometrically as slippage cracks, which are shaped like a half-moon.
Noting that they are usually formed by the sliding of the asphalt layer as a result of horizontal forces resulting from traffic, such as heavy braking areas, slopes, climbing areas, and road intersections.
Al-Saffar added in a post on his official Facebook page – followed by Mosul Time Radio – that these slumps and cracks are due to several reasons, including the weakness of the asphalt mixture or the weakness of the bonding strength between the two layers of asphalt as a result of the lack of a tack coat material.
He continued that one of the reasons is also the presence of a layer of dust, clay soil, dirt, and even water on the surface of the asphalt to be covered, pointing out that it may also occur due to the presence of a large percentage of soft materials in the asphalt mixture, or due to insufficient leveling work as required.
Regarding the maintenance process, he explained that it is carried out by completely removing the damaged area, cleaning the surface and applying a tack coat adhesive in case of bonding the two layers of asphalt, then the cladding process as usual, with an emphasis on reviewing the asphalt mixture data to ensure its conformity and compatibility with the conditions to which it is exposed. Her way.
He also continued that in order to automatically identify this type of cracks, the Automated Road Analyzer (ARAN) can be used, which is equipped with advanced three-dimensional laser profiles, as it has the ability to measure the size and severity of cracks with high accuracy.
Pictures have spread on social networking sites during the past two days about a collapse in the road linking the city of Mosul and the Qayyarah district, while the Nineveh Roads and Bridges Directorate clarified that the road is still under the responsibility of the company executing the road and that it is still within the maintenance period, pointing out that the executing company will work To fix the deterioration according to the established standards, according to the Directorate.
