The Minister of Electricity, Ziad Ali Fadel, announced The country’s energy need reaches approximately 50 thousand megawatts .

The Minister of Electricity said in a press conference held in Najaf Governorate, “Our production this summer reached 27.55 thousand megawatts, a number recorded for the first time in Iraq .”

He added, “But due to excessive energy consumption, Iraq’s need has reached 48,000 megawatts of energy.” ‏

Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani confirmed in July 2023 that the measures taken by the government culminated in bringing electrical energy production to 26 thousand megawatts, which is the highest production in the country’s history .

Iraq has been suffering from a chronic electricity shortage for decades, as a result of the siege and successive wars. Residents have been protesting for many years against frequent power outages, especially during the summer, when temperatures sometimes reach 50 degrees Celsius .
