Yesterday , Friday, the Directorate of Southern Electricity Production held a meeting with the French company Total to discuss the final stages of adding 1,000 megawatts to the national electricity network .

The media office of the Ministry of Electricity said, in a statement, “The Director General of the Electric Power Production Company in the South, Mahdi Saleh Mathkour, held an expanded meeting with the French company Total, to discuss the necessary preparations to begin implementing the solar electricity production station project with a capacity of 1,000 megawatts in Basra Governorate in the Artawi region.” “.

He added, “During the meeting he chaired with the executing company, the Director General urged to accelerate the stages of directing the implementation of the project due to the importance of solar energy in diversifying renewable sources .”

He pointed out that “this trend is part of a broader vision of the Ministry of Electricity to increase production capacity throughout the country while preserving environmental determinants and meeting the growing need for energy demand .”

On Sunday, June 30, the head of the National Investment Commission, Haider Muhammad Makiya, signed the investment license for the solar power station project with the French company Total Energy, with a capacity of 1,000 megawatts in Basra Governorate, Artawi .

The Chairman of the Authority said in his speech during the investment license signing ceremony that this project is considered the first investment opportunity to grant a solar power station within the government’s plan to diversify renewable energy sources .

Makiya stated that this project will add this energy from solar energy to the national grid .

In April, Total Energy announced on its website that it had signed contracts for the land and connection networks for the Ratawi solar power station. This covers the process of constructing a transmission line through the towers with a length of 180 km to connect it to the electricity distribution network in Basra, with the installation of a secondary distribution station .

Total said in a statement at the time, “The station will be one of the largest clean solar energy stations in the Middle East and North Africa region,” noting that “the station will feed more than 350,000 homes with clean electrical energy, with the project being completed by 2025 through four stages”.
