The Oncology and Nuclear Medicine Hospital in Mosul, the center of Nineveh Governorate, announced the arrival of one of the linear treatments for treating cancer patients to the city after a 10-year hiatus .

The specialist doctor and supervisor of the radiation therapy file at the hospital, Nibras Aziz, said, “The new treatment that has arrived is the radioactive iodine capsule that is given to those suffering from thyroid cancer,” indicating that “this treatment is of great importance in treating those suffering from it, and its arrival came after efforts by the governorate administration, the health department, and Nineveh’s representatives .”

He added that “the return of treatment to Nineveh comes after a hiatus that lasted for ten years,” explaining that “the pills for cancer diseases that arrived at Mosul Hospital for Nuclear Medicine were accompanied by health and security measures due to the danger of those treatments .”

Cancer patients in Nineveh Governorate suffer from many problems, the most prominent of which is the delay in completing the specialized hospital for cancer diseases and the lack of linear accelerators that provide radiation treatments, which forces patients to travel outside Iraq or to other Iraqi governorates to receive the required treatment .

The Minister of Health, Saleh Mahdi Al-Hasnawi, said during a dialogue session at the Al-Rafidain Dialogue Forum on April 6, 2024, that Nineveh Governorate has the highest rate of cancer cases, and not Basra Governorate, as is rumored .

Al-Hasnawi pointed out that “there is an advanced cancer center in Nineveh Governorate, with the opening of another inside the new Al-Sayyab Hospital with the latest medical equipment .”

The director of the Oncology Hospital in Mosul, Abdul Qader Salem Ahmed, also confirmed that Nineveh recorded 2,700 new infections in 2022 .

He explained that the rate of cancer cases in Nineveh Governorate is estimated at 63.6 per 100,000 people, while stressing that the actual number of cases of the disease is much higher than that, as many well-off patients resort to traveling outside Iraq .
