The United Nations Investigative Team (UNITAD) has published findings on international crimes committed by ISIS against inmates in Badoush prison .
According to a statement by the team , “The team has strengthened accountability for crimes committed by the terrorist organization ISIS, and in the context of completing its activities before its closure, by publishing a report outlining the detailed findings on the international crimes committed by ISIS during its attack on Badush Central Prison near Mosul on June 10, 2014. ”
“Nearly a thousand male prisoners, but also a small number of Yazidis and Christians were executed by members of the terrorist organization ISIS in at least 6 locations on this day, and the remains of more than 600 victims were exhumed as part of these investigations, in cooperation with the Directorate of Affairs and Protection of Mass Graves and the Directorate of Forensic Medicine in Iraq, and with the support of the investigation team, ” he added.
The team concluded, according to its statement, that the killing in Badush prison was carried out with genocidal intent, as part of the genocidal policy pursued by ISIS against Shiites in Iraq .
“With the support of SITU , UNITAD has produced a video that provides an overview of the attack on Badoush prison and the team’s findings regarding international crimes committed against inmates there,” he continued, noting that “this is the third collaboration of its kind between SITU and UNITAD, which aims to visualize prominent attacks committed by ISIS using information collected by the team .”
He added: “A copy of this report was shared with the Supreme Judicial Council of Iraq on 10 September 2024, and key elements of the investigation were previously shared with relevant authorities in a third country, in accordance with UNITAD’s terms of reference and its broader mandate to promote global accountability for international crimes committed by the terrorist organization ISIS.”
