Yesterday , Tuesday, the House of Representatives voted to amend the Martyrs Foundation Law after a session that witnessed sharp verbal altercations between the representatives .
A statement by the media department of the House of Representatives stated that “the House voted on the draft law amending the first law of the Martyrs Foundation Law No. of 2016. “
For his part, the Acting Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mohsen Al-Mandalawi, said that any decision or law voted on within the House of Representatives related to the rights of martyrs and the care of their families is part of repaying the debt and in application of Article 132 of the Constitution .
He added, “This law contributes to finding new financial resources for the Martyrs Fund and providing services and facilities to the beneficiaries of the provisions of this law, in addition to reviewing the organizational and administrative structure of the Martyrs Foundation .”
Al-Mandlawi continued, “Among the reasons that necessitated amending the law is achieving equality in rights and privileges between those covered by the provisions of this law and the law on compensation for those affected by military operations, military errors and terrorist operations No. 20 of 2009, as amended, in addition to not depriving them of their rights and privileges stipulated in other laws, noting that the draft of this law contributes to providing care and facilities within the educational, scientific, health, banking and real estate scope for the families of martyrs and a number of other privileges in all fields .”
The Sunni MPs objected to the law, as it differentiated between the martyrs of the former regime and the martyrs after 2003, considering that the article meant excluding the martyrs after 2003 if they were linked to Saddam Hussein’s regime or the Baathists. As a result, the session was stopped due to arguments between the “Sunni and Shiite” MPs, before proceeding to appease all parties and agreeing to pass the law.
