Mosul city hosted the Mosul Maqam Music Festival, which comes within the project to preserve and archive Mosul’s musical heritage and the heritage in general in Nineveh Governorate .
Mahmoud Juma, supervisor of the Nineveh Musical Heritage Archiving Project, said, “The festival held in Mosul is a stage in the program of the project to preserve the musical heritage of the city of Mosul and the entire Nineveh Governorate .”
He added that “the project is sponsored and funded by the British Council in partnership with Excel University in Britain and the American University in Sulaimani,” noting that “the festival is interested in reviving the Iraqi maqam in Mosul, and also seeks to create new music by mixing traditional and modern music using Western instruments within Eastern music .”
Jumaa noted that these activities would restore cultural life in the city of Mosul after years of war and destruction.
