A local source reported yesterday , Sunday, that the possibility of shutting down water supplies to neighborhoods of the capital, Baghdad, is “possible” due to the leakage of black oil spots from the Tigris River in the city of Tikrit towards the capital .
The source explained that the authorities are anticipating that the oil slicks will head towards Baghdad via the Tigris River, stressing that this leak contains extremely dangerous chemicals .
Yesterday morning , the Salah al-Din Governorate Water Department announced the appearance of oil pools in the Tigris River that reached areas in the city of Tikrit, which forced it to temporarily halt water projects in the district, until the oil spots were dealt with and treated as quickly as possible .
The department also stated that its government cadres are working at full capacity within a comprehensive emergency plan to address the repercussions of the heavy rains and floods that swept the governorate .
This comes in conjunction with a wave of heavy rains in several governorates, including the capital Baghdad, which announced yesterday that official work would be suspended for Sunday .
