Russian media reported that Russia’s energy strategy until 2050 aims to increase the share of Russian exports in international coal trade from 14.5% in 2023 to 15-23% in 2036 and 25-30% by 2050 .
According to the text of the “Energy Strategy-2050” that has been completed and sent to the government, Russian coal exports may increase by 2050 in the target scenario to 350 million tons from 212.5 million tons at the end of 2023 (+64.7%), and in the inertia scenario coal exports may reach 310 million tons (+45.9%).
In the stress scenario, Russian coal exports could fall to 100.5 million tons by 2050 (-52.7% compared to 2023) .
According to the document, coal exports from Russia by 2036 in the target scenario may grow to 269 million tons (+26.6% compared to 2023), and in the inertia scenario – to 255 million tons (+20%).
Meanwhile, the Russian Energy Ministry expects in the stress scenario that coal exports will fall to 155 million tons by 2036 (-27% compared to 2023) .
Coal production is expected to increase by 2050 in the target scenario to 600.5 million tons (+37% compared to 2023), while in the inertia scenario – to 486.4 million tons versus 438.7 million tons in 2023 (+10.87%). In the stress scenario, coal production in Russia may decrease to 286.6 million tons (-34.7%) by 2050 .
Coal production is expected to reach 523.9 million tonnes (+19.4% compared to 2023) in the target scenario by 2036, and 470.1 million tonnes (+7.2%) in the inertia scenario. In the stress scenario, this figure may decrease to 389.9 million tonnes (-11.1% compared to 2023) .
