The Mosul Heritage Foundation, which is concerned with the heritage and historical aspects of the city of Mosul, announced yesterday , Wednesday, the completion of work on building the famous Al-Hadba Minaret in the Great Mosque of al-Nuri .

The head of the foundation, Ayoub Dhnoon, said, “Work on building the Al-Hadba minaret and tower has been completed.” He explained that work on building the mosque is ongoing , and that it is scheduled to be completed early next year. He pointed out that the minaret represents a symbol of the identity of Mosul society .

“Work is currently underway on the precise maintenance of the minaret’s external surfaces, led by Italian experts and with the participation of Iraqi trainees from the College of Fine Arts at the University of Mosul,” Dhnoon added, noting that these precise efforts ensure that the work is carried out according to the highest international standards, to preserve the legacy of Al-Hadba for future generations .

Known as the “Hadba” (hunchback) minaret of the Great Mosque of al-Nuri in Mosul because of its distinctive tilt, it has stood tall for more than 840 years as a symbol of Mosul’s resilience and cultural heritage .

With funding from the UAE, UNESCO, in cooperation with the Sunni Endowment Directorate in Nineveh and the province’s Heritage and Antiquities Inspectorate, completed the reconstruction of the Al-Hadba Minaret, and work continues on the reconstruction of the Al-Nuri Mosque, which was destroyed by ISIS gangs during the city’s liberation operations in 2017.
