The Iraqi Meteorological Authority explained the reason why residents have not yet felt the usual winter cold .
It stated, in a report published on its website, The reason lies in the presence of a high pressure system in the upper layers of the atmosphere, specifically at an altitude of about 5,000 meters, i.e. in the 500 hectopascal layer .
She pointed out that this high pressure causes high pressure in the region, which prevents cold air masses from descending towards Iraq, indicating that this effect is linked to the movement of air currents in the upper layers such as Rossby and Kelvin waves, which play an important role in the concentration of depressions and high pressures .
The Authority noted that these weather conditions have caused heavy rains in central and western Europe at the present time, as a result of the influence of the Rossby wave .
However, the authority confirmed that the winter cold will begin to arrive gradually at the end of this month, as this coincides with the onset of winter from a climatic point of view .
On the other hand, the Authority stated that the rainy season in Iraq began more than a month ago, but many cities in the center and south of the country did not receive sufficient amounts of rain, as they did not exceed the expected monthly rates .
The Authority also confirmed in previous reports that the beginning of the 2024/2025 season will witness lower than average quantities in many areas, without including extreme weather conditions in these calculations.
