Nineveh Police Directorate announced yesterday , Sunday, that there has been an increase in suicide rates in the province .
Nineveh Police Director, Major General Falah Al-Jarba, said, “Suicide cases in Nineveh have increased in recent years,” adding that “this year has recorded higher suicide cases than the previous year .”
Al-Jarba pointed out that “in the current year 2024, until the beginning of October, 74 suicide cases were recorded .”
Al-Jarba noted that the causes and motives for suicide are multiple, the most prominent of which are psychological conditions, poor economic conditions, and failure in society .
He also explained that the largest cases are recorded by jumping into the Tigris River from the city’s bridges, stressing that the police and rescue teams were able to retrieve and save many people before they committed suicide .
In recent years, Iraq has witnessed a general increase in suicide cases, with numbers increasing significantly in many governorates .
Statistics indicate that about 55 to 70 suicides occur monthly, especially among young people, who suffer from psychological and social pressures, especially in rural areas.
