The Parliamentary Higher Education Committee revealed its efforts to pass legislation to enhance private education and the rights of university professors in Iraq .
Education Committee member Firas Al-Maslamawi said: The committee is currently working on completing the second reading of the private education law, in addition to making amendments to the law on the basis of equivalence of certificates and academic degrees .
He pointed out that these laws will be included for reading and voting in the upcoming sessions of the House of Representatives .
Al-Maslamawi explained that the Higher Education Committee is also seeking to amend the University Service Law, which is considered one of the most important laws related to the education sector .
He added that this law includes the entitlements and privileges of university professors, in addition to their rights, with a focus on supporting and enhancing scientific research .
Early last October, the Higher Education Committee in the Iraqi Parliament revealed developments in the private university education law. Committee member Haider Al-Mutairi informed At that time, the amendment included forming a board of trustees to supervise private colleges, and raising the percentage of revenues allocated to the Ministry of Education from 3% to 5%, with the aim of developing the infrastructure of public universities .
The amendment also includes emphasizing the rights of workers through official contracts, copies of which are kept in the Ministry of Education, and requiring the submission of financial regulations when establishing new universities. In addition, private colleges are given three years to restructure themselves to transform into universities, according to conditions that guarantee an appropriate educational environment.
