A security source reported, last Tuesday evening, that a security force raided the Taboul Mosque in the center of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, in implementation of the decision to evacuate it .
The source explained that the security force carried out the evacuation duty in accordance with the security directives, indicating that four members of Mahdi Al-Sumaidi’s protection force were arrested for preventing the force from carrying out its work .
The source confirmed that, according to the directives, anyone who violates this decision will be arrested .
In mid-September, a security force from the Federal Police surrounded the Umm al-Taboul Mosque in the center of the capital, to carry out a campaign to remove residential encroachments in which a group of Sunni Endowment employees reside .
A security source stated at the time that a committee from the Sunni Endowment Office was present at the site to evacuate the mosque and the Fatwa House based on judicial decisions, while the security force was deployed to ensure that no clashes occurred .
It is noteworthy that the Umm al-Taboul Mosque is the main headquarters of the Sunni Fatwa Council, which has been headed by the Grand Mufti of Iraq, Mahdi al-Sumaidaie, since 2014. There are disputes between the Council and the Sunni Endowment regarding the ownership of the mosque, and from time to time, raids or security cordons are carried out on the mosque.
