The British Home Office has announced the signing of a security agreement with Iraq to target human trafficking gangs and enhance cooperation on the border, in its latest efforts to combat illegal immigration .

“There are smuggling gangs that profit from dangerous crossings by small boats, and their operations extend across northern France, Germany and the whole of Europe, all the way to the Kurdistan Region of Iraq and beyond ,” Minister Yvette Cooper said in a statement.

“Organised crime is active across borders, so law enforcement must also operate across borders,” Cooper added, stressing that Britain will also support Iraqi law enforcement in tackling other serious organised crime, including drugs.
