The Parliamentary Committee on Economy, Industry and Trade announced the results of its visit to Basra Governorate, the far south of Iraq .

This visit aims to review the work of the inspection company in the northern Umm Qasr port, after complaints were received from car importers .

The head of the committee, Kazem Al-Shammari, said, “The visit came after complaints were received from importers of Korean cars and others regarding the accumulation of their imported cars at the port due to problems related to certificates of conformity and ensuring that the wheels are used or new .”

Al-Shammari added, “The sub-committee headed by us visited Umm Qasr Port to verify the validity of the complaints, where it met with those concerned and recorded observations and indicators about the work of the examining company,” stressing that “Iraq is exposed to a loss in public money due to its reliance on companies from the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, instead of establishing national examining companies .”

Last Tuesday , the Iraqi Border Ports Authority seized more than 200 cars and heavy machinery that were brought into Umm Qasr Port with forged data, as part of a campaign to combat smuggling .

According to a statement by the authority, these vehicles were seized in just two days at the northern and central Umm Qasr ports, where it was found that they had fake chassis numbers to remove their old models. The vehicles were seized after coordination with the Umm Qasr investigative judge, and they were confiscated according to an official seizure report .
