The debate continues regarding the Personal Status Law in Iraq. The Iraqi street is divided between supporters of amendments to the law to end the injustice done to men under the current law, and opponents who believe that the amendment will cause injustice to women if it is passed.
In light of the issue, the US State Department warned against approving the amendment to the Personal Status Law, which it considered to undermine the rights of women and children. In addition, supporters of the amendment to the Personal Status Law call for the necessity of passing it to do justice to the man and end the injustice to which he was exposed in the file of child custody and alimony, while clerics called for a full study of the amendment before expressing an opinion of support or rejection. Sheikh Zakir Hasawi, the imam and preacher of the Pasha Mosque in Mosul, said: The amendment to this law must originally be subject to Islamic law in various schools of thought.
