(SPI) for the Middle East region for December 2024 revealed severe and extreme drought in all areas of Iraq (between 1.6-1.8) above the normal limit, according to the Iraqi Meteorological Authority.
The authority indicated in a statement that “soil dryness also included large areas of the Arabian Peninsula, Iran and Turkey,” attributing this to “the scarcity of rainfall during the past month.”
Iraq has been suffering from a water crisis for several years, but it has intensified and reached a dangerous stage in the last four years, as water levels have dropped to unprecedented levels due to the drought that is hitting the entire region.
