The positions of Iraqi politicians on the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria became clear, as the head of the Sovereignty Party, Khamis al-Khanjar, congratulated the Syrian people on the occasion of the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, expressing his hope at the same time for the establishment of a new state in Syria “that believes in citizenship and freedoms.”

For his part, the leader of the “Victory” coalition, Haider al-Abadi, called for investing in the “enormous” commonalities between the Iraqi and Syrian peoples in “peace and construction”, and working to end conflicts and wars, expressing his hope that this day would be a day of freedom, justice and peace for its people.

While former Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi warned of “dangerous” repercussions resulting from the events in Syria, he said: “After the Lebanese victory, the counterattack in Syria achieved its first successes, and will achieve other painful successes.”
