The Green Iraq Observatory, which specializes in environmental affairs, criticized The government’s neglect of the “eagle”, which is an Iraqi national symbol, calls for defining its characteristics and including it in school curricula .

The observatory said in a press statement: “The past few days coincided with World Animal Day, and on this day countries affirm their positions and present their vision for protecting their animals,” indicating that “the government and the rest of the executive bodies and legislative authorities do not consider protecting animals in Iraq among their priorities, whether by preventing their poaching or enacting laws to limit it .”

The observatory explained that “neglect included the symbol of the Iraqi animal, the eagle, by not defining it in school books or using its image on postage stamps,” adding that “this bird was associated with ancient Sumerian mythology, as it is known for the patience and strength that characterizes Iraqis.”
