Ministry of Agriculture spokesman Mohammed Al-Khuzaie confirmed this Success in planting more than two million palm trees during the era of the current government, and while revealing the total numbers, it indicated that the palm cultivation project has turned into a successful project after decades of losses, with annual exports exceeding 650 thousand tons .
Al-Khuzaie said, “The number of palm trees declined due to the senseless wars of the previous regime to more than 8 million palm trees, after reaching 33 million before that in the 1980s .”
He added, “The current government has created the elements to revive palm cultivation and transform it from an unproductive project into a successful project as a result of the improvement in the security situation and the provision of modern irrigation methods, as well as the unprecedented interest of Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani, as the government popularized the method of tissue farming that accelerates the production life of the palm tree to Two or three years maximum, as we succeeded in planting more than two million palm trees as a first stage, bringing the number of palm trees in Iraq to more than 22 million for the first time since the 1980s .”
He continued, “Many farmers who left palm cultivation returned to work as a result of the availability of the elements for success, which enabled Iraq to export 650 thousand tons of dates during the past year alone.”
