Officials in the Mosul Goldsmiths Market Reconstruction Project confirmed that the project has reached 90% completion, while they indicated that 600 shops have been prepared with a design that is consistent with the market’s heritage character, and they detailed the service projects in the Goldsmiths Market, including cameras and 10 entrances .
The Director of Mosul Municipality, Abdul Sattar Al-Habou, said: “The reconstruction campaign that Mosul witnessed aimed to restore life to most of the commercial and economic gatherings, including the heritage sites that Mosul citizens and visitors were keen to visit, so one of our priorities was to rehabilitate the goldsmith market .”
He added, “The engineering staff of the Mosul Municipality Directorate has begun work to rehabilitate and develop the goldsmiths’ market in a traditional style, which will contribute to the return of economic activity to the city .”
For his part, the resident engineer of the project, Abdul Rahman Aden, said, “The rehabilitation works for the goldsmiths’ market include covering the facades of the shops and buildings within the market’s alleys with natural Halan stone, in addition to installing electrical lines and covering the market floor with basalt stone .”
He added: “A rainwater drainage system will also be implemented, and the market will be equipped with a security camera system and a civil defense system. The facades will have a heritage character, and 10 doors will be built for the market as its main entrances .”
He pointed out that “the number of shops in the market reached 600 shops, and they were completely demolished and rebuilt,” stressing: “The project’s completion rate reached 90 %.”
In turn, the representative of the Nineveh Workers’ Union, Ashraf Bashir, said that “a model was chosen from several models to rebuild the market in a way that is consistent with the heritage character,” calling on goldsmiths to “cooperate with the reconstruction campaign and begin preparing their shops in line with the approaching opening of this project .”
He pointed out that “there were several meetings held with shop owners who cooperated with landlords by exempting them from the rent of shops in the goldsmith market for a full year,” stressing that “rebuilding the goldsmith market represents a major step towards restoring commercial activity in the city and returning economic life to Mosul after years of challenges and destruction.”
