The Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources of the Kurdistan Regional Government said that the Iraqi Ministerial Economic Council took an important decision in favor of the farmers of the Kurdistan Region, following intensive discussions held today, in response to the demands of the region’s farmers, where decisive steps were taken to support the marketing of their agricultural products, especially tomatoes .
The ministry explained that agricultural products such as cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, and watermelons had been given a specific period for import into Iraq, which conflicted with the local agricultural season, especially because it coincided with the Ashura ceremonies, indicating that a decision came today from the Iraqi Ministerial Economic Council, based on a request from the Minister of Agriculture and Water Resources in the Kurdistan Region, Bekhert Talabani, to protect the interests of farmers in the region .
She explained that all Iraqi border crossings will be closed to the import of tomatoes from abroad, which will provide farmers in the Kurdistan Region with a golden opportunity to market their local products in Iraqi markets .
The statement indicated that this decision represents an important step towards strengthening the agricultural economy of the region, and is the result of the great efforts made by Bekhard Talabani, in order to provide solutions to the marketing problems facing farmers in the areas of Penjwin, Sidakan, and the plains of Erbil and Dohuk .
The statement quoted Talabani as saying that the farmers’ products in the region have reached a level ready for marketing, and that this decision will contribute to their entry into the central and southern Iraqi markets, which will contribute to addressing the economic problems facing farmers .
She stressed that this decision will enhance the farmers’ ability to market their products and address the challenges they faced in marketing their crops, which will achieve economic stability for them under the current circumstances .
