Iraq denied leaks about Iran using Iraqi territory to launch its expected attack on Israel, and stressed that it would not allow its territory to be used in the ongoing conflict by any party or in any way.

The Iraqi National Security Ministerial Council described these leaks as “false pretexts and justifications intended to be a justification for attacking it, its sovereignty and the sanctity of its lands.”

The council said in a statement following a meeting chaired by Mohammed Shia al-Sudani: “Iraq’s supreme interests require working to keep its lands and airspace away from the war that Israel is trying to expand, based on its aggressive policies against the countries and peoples of the region.”

At the end of last October, the Axios website quoted two Israeli sources as saying that “Iran is preparing to attack Israel from Iraqi territory in the coming days.”

The Axios report indicated that the attack is expected to be carried out from Iraq using a large number of drones and ballistic missiles.

The report added: “The execution of the attack through pro-Iranian armed groups in Iraq may be an attempt by Tehran to avoid another Israeli attack against strategic targets in Iran.”
