The Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council urged investigative courts to pay attention to the phenomenon of usury in order to achieve the goal of punishment as a deterrent .
This came according to a letter signed by the head of the Judicial Supervision Authority, Judge Laith Jabr Hamza, dated October 20th .
Judge Hamza directed the Presidency of the Public Prosecution Courts and the Presidency of the Courts of Appeal to urge the investigation courts to give special importance to the phenomenon of dealing with usury or lending money with apparent or hidden interest that exceeds the legally prescribed limit, whether the borrower is a person or offices specialized in financial dealings, in order to implement the law to achieve the goal of punishment through general and specific deterrence and combating this phenomenon.
