The Human Rights Committee of the Iraqi Council of Representatives announced that it is closely following the increasing reports indicating an escalation in cases of torture in security investigation centers, noting that confessions are extracted by force and in ways that violate the most basic standards of human rights and human dignity .
The committee confirmed in a statement These practices constitute a flagrant violation of the Iraqi Constitution, which guarantees the protection of human dignity, as well as the international conventions ratified by Iraq, most notably the Convention against Torture .
The committee explained that these violations contribute to weakening trust between citizens and the state, and present a negative image of the Iraqi legal system at the local and international levels .
The Human Rights Committee called on all those affected by these practices to submit their complaints and documents directly to the Committee, stressing that it will work to receive all files and follow them up carefully with the relevant authorities, to ensure that those responsible for these crimes are held accountable .
The Committee called on the government, the Ministry of Interior and the judicial authorities to take urgent and comprehensive measures to stop these illegal practices, strengthen oversight mechanisms over investigation centres, and activate the role of independent investigation committees to ensure that perpetrators are held accountable in accordance with the law .
The committee stressed that it will not hesitate to use all available constitutional and oversight tools to limit this phenomenon, including interrogating officials and following up on cases before the judiciary, in addition to pressuring for tougher penalties on anyone proven to be involved in torture .
The committee concluded its statement by emphasizing that building a state of law begins with protecting human rights and ensuring the rule of justice, noting that any shortcoming in this aspect represents a direct threat to the security and stability of Iraqi society.
