Prominent Iraqi politician and former MP Mithal Al-Alusi believes that Donald Trump’s arrival to the White House will prevent Iran’s followers from trading in Iraq and the region, by removing US forces from the country .
Al-Alusi said “Trump is completely different from Biden, especially with regard to undermining Iran’s influence in the Middle East as well as its armed arms in the region. Therefore, he will certainly not take any real step to withdraw his country’s forces from Iraq in order to expand Iranian influence more widely and more dangerously in Iraq and the region as a whole .”
He added, “Trump will work during the next stage to undermine Iranian influence through various steps of economic sanctions, and for this reason he will keep American forces in Iraq, as they are considered a force to prevent the expansion of Iranian influence and prevent Iraq from becoming a land for transferring weapons from Iran to both Syria and Lebanon .”
For its part, the Security and Defense Committee in the Iraqi Parliament commented last Thursday on concerns about preventing the withdrawal of American forces from Iraq after Trump’s victory in the US presidential elections .
Committee member MP Ali Nehme said: “The American policy is a fixed policy no matter how many presidents change, and there is a preliminary agreement between Baghdad and Washington to withdraw the remaining foreign forces, led by the American forces. It was agreed that part of these forces would withdraw in mid-2025, and the complete withdrawal of the forces would be at the end of 2026. “
Nima stated that “Iraq’s agreement on this matter was made with the relevant military institutions in the United States, and therefore Trump’s arrival to the White House will not change anything in this regard, and we do not expect him to work to obstruct the withdrawal of his forces from Iraq. Rather, he may want to withdraw those forces, and this is what the coming days will reveal .”
He pointed out that “any obstruction by the Trump administration to the file of withdrawing US forces from Iraq will certainly be met with official, political and even popular Iraqi rejection, and the Iraqi government is serious about resolving this file and adhering to what was agreed upon according to documented official meetings, and therefore what was agreed upon cannot be overturned so easily by the new US administration .”
During the past three days , the victory of Republican candidate and former US President Donald Trump in the US presidential elections has raised questions about the nature of the next phase that Iraq will witness on the political, economic and security levels .
last Wednesday , stressing that the people had given him this new mandate. In a speech he gave after the announcement of the initial results, Trump said: “I won a historic victory, and we regained the majority in the Senate,” and pledged to “end the wars.”
