The Ministry of Justice announced that it is close to contracting with a specialized company to block the Internet inside prisons. While it indicated that all inmates are subject to the provisions of the law and no category is exempted from this, it noted the adoption of two criteria for implementing death sentences .
Ministry spokesman Ahmed Laibi said: “No category of prisoners are allowed to possess mobile phones, but what happens is that there is collusion to smuggle phones in devious ways and hand them over to some inmates .”
Al-Aibi explained that “the inmate inside the prisons has rights and obligations, and among those obligations is not to possess any mobile phone inside the correctional departments,” indicating that “there are communication booths in the Iraqi correctional departments that the inmate uses to communicate with his relatives at specific times and for specific periods of time, and all inmates are subject to the provisions of the law and no category is exempt from that .”
He added, “The Ministry of Justice has concluded contracts to supply surveillance cameras and sonar devices to correctional departments. In addition, the Ministry is currently in the process of preparing to contract with a specialized company for the purpose of blocking the Internet service inside correctional departments in prisons. The matter will be worked on in the near future to prevent any future violations .”
He pointed out, on the other hand, that “the mechanism for implementing death sentences is subject to two basic criteria: the first is that the sentence becomes final and enforceable, and the second criterion is the issuance of a presidential decree from the presidency of the republic .”
