A security source in Lebanon said that the Iraqi businessman, Nour Zuhair, suspected of being involved in the “theft of the century” case, had only spent 3 days in Lebanon .
He told the source Zuhair left Lebanon yesterday, Friday, for the UAE , and the security source did not comment on the reports that Zuhair was injured in a traffic accident .
On the other hand, sources at Saint Therese Hospital, located in the Hadath area, a suburb of Beirut, said that they could not, for professional medical reasons, confirm or deny the presence of Nour Zuhair in the hospital, or whether he entered the hospital at all after the reports that spoke of… He suffered serious injuries in a traffic accident .
While these sources said from inside the hospital She cannot provide additional details. Other sources in the Lebanese Red Cross and the Lebanese Civil Defense Authority said that they do not have a file bearing the name of Nour Zuhair or that he was involved in an accident and transferred to any of the hospitals in the Lebanese capital .
The sources explained The two medical bodies have no reports about a case like this for this person, nor did they transport anyone injured in the aforementioned accident to the area of the event .
The day before yesterday, Friday, Lebanese media reported that Iraqi businessman Nour Zuhair was involved in a traffic accident in the Hadat area – Beirut, which nearly claimed his life .
According to what was reported by the Lebanese media, Nour Zuhair was taken to the hospital following the accident, where he received first aid .
Nour Zuhair, the first accused of stealing tax deposits in Iraq – or what is known in the media as “theft of the century” – was scheduled to appear at the Central Criminal Court in Baghdad for trial on the 27th of this month .
Zuhair recently appeared in a television interview defending himself and demanding that his trial be public, and threatened to “reveal the names and details of corruption cases .”
Stealing the century
In 2022 , it was announced that more than 3 trillion Iraqi dinars ($2.5 billion) were lost from tax deposits by a coalition of 5 oil companies using fake instruments .
Following this, an order was issued to summon officials close to former Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi, namely the Minister of Finance, Ali Allawi, the Director of the Prime Minister’s Office, Raed Jouhi, and others .
On October 24, 2022, Nour Zuhair was arrested, as he chairs the board of directors of one of the companies involved in the case. He was later released on “bail” after Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani announced the recovery of 5% of the amount, in exchange for Nour Zuhair’s pledge to hand over the entire stolen amounts within Days .
The Anti-Corruption Court set August 14, 2024 as the date for Nour Zuhair’s trial, but the trial was postponed to August 27 of the same year due to the defendant’s failure to appear .
Before the trial, Nour Zuhair appeared in a television interview with the Iraqi Al-Sharqiya channel, during which he defended himself, accusing an unnamed MP of trying to blackmail him .
