China’s commerce ministry said Saturday that the latest round of negotiations with the European Union over the bloc’s tariffs on Chinese-made electric cars ended in Brussels with “significant differences” remaining between the two sides .

Brussels has decided to impose new customs duties of up to 35.3 percent on imports of electric cars manufactured in China .

Representatives from Beijing and the 27-nation bloc have held eight rounds of talks on the issue in Brussels since September 20 .

“There are still significant differences between the two sides,” a statement from the ministry said, adding that Beijing has invited EU negotiators for further discussions in China .

The statement indicated that the negotiators “made significant progress in some areas,” but “did not reach an acceptable solution that satisfies both sides .”

“We hope that the EU can meet China halfway, arrange a visit to China as soon as possible and speed up consultations with a constructive attitude so as to reach a proper solution ,” the statement added.
