A number of lawyers in the city of Mosul confirmed that the high unemployment rates and high dowries led to an increase in the rates of spinsterhood in Mosul.
Lawyer Alaa Al-Hamdani explained that due to the increase in demands regarding dowries, in addition to the spread of unemployment, this led to the spread of spinsterhood and its rates to increase significantly.
He added that unemployment and the lack of job opportunities in the private sector led to a reluctance to marry and an increase in divorce cases as well.
For her part, lawyer Hoda Al-Hilali said that families bear responsibility for the high demands and requirements of marriage, and therefore all these problems have led to an increase in the demands of girls, as well as the reluctance of young men to marry.
Lawyers warned against legislating the law on the marriage of minors, which would affect the societal fabric of Iraqi families.
