The Minister of Water Resources in the new Syrian administration, Osama Abu Zeid, revealed the possibility of reconsidering water agreements with many countries, including Iraq .
Abu Zeid said in a television interview that “international sanctions affect the water sector and other sectors,” referring to “the issue of reviewing water agreements with neighboring countries such as Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon and Turkey in a way that achieves benefits for all and achieves water security for Syria and neighboring countries .”
Abu Zeid continued, saying, “The new Syrian administration intends to return the water resources to their disposal by sitting with the concerned parties and achieving agreements that will be fair to everyone .”
Abu Zaid pointed out that “there is a severe shortage in the sources of electrical energy that feed the water sources, in addition to the stations suffering from a severe shortage in the mechanical and electrical equipment necessary to operate these stations .”
Abu Zaid added, “There is a severe shortage of materials in the warehouses, which are the materials needed to carry out the necessary maintenance operations for these stations and networks, to ensure the improvement and provision of drinking water services.”
