On Monday, Noon Center for Strategic Studies and Dialogue, in cooperation with the Presidency of the Nineveh Court of Appeal, organized a dialogue seminar entitled (Press and Freedom of Expression: Rights and Duties within the Framework of the Law) in the hall of the Court of Appeal in the city of Mosul .
The symposium was attended by the President of the Nineveh Court of Appeal, Judge Raed Hamid Al-Muslih, the Governor of Nineveh, Abdul Qader Al-Dakhil, the Deputy Chairman of the Nineveh Provincial Council, Mohammed Al-Jubouri, and the Council Member, Abdullah Al-Nujaifi, in addition to the Commander of the Nineveh Police, Major General Falah Al-Jarba, the Director of Intelligence, Major General Ahmed, the Director of National Security, Brigadier General Falah Hassan, and the Deputy Commander of the Popular Mobilization Operations in Nineveh, Mustafa Al-Awadi, in addition to a large presence of journalists, media professionals, and civil activists .
The director of the center, Jarir Muhammad, said: The symposium addressed three main axes: the legal framework for freedom of expression, the right to criticism in the field of journalism, and the importance of adhering to legal frameworks to protect journalists from legal consequences .
Mohammed added, “The purpose of the symposium is to focus on the challenges facing journalists and media professionals while performing their duties,” stressing the need to provide them with the necessary support to continue their oversight and media role .”
He pointed out “the importance of strengthening the relationship between the media and judicial institutions, to create a legal environment that supports freedom of the press, while stressing the importance of journalists’ commitment to constructive criticism as a means of enhancing transparency and accountability,” calling for “organizing ongoing events that bring together media professionals, judges and officials to enhance mutual understanding and cooperation within a legal framework that guarantees the rights of all parties.”
Nineveh Governor Abdul Qader Al-Dakhil stressed that the authorities in Nineveh are keen to support journalistic work, freedom of opinion, expression and constructive criticism, as it is a right guaranteed by the Iraqi constitution, noting that the press plays an effective role in exposing the file of corruption, dysfunction and administrative negligence.
