A recent study has revealed that high-intensity exercise contributes more to suppressing appetite than light or moderate exercise, making it a more effective option for those seeking to lose weight .
The study, conducted by researchers from the University of Virginia in the United States, was conducted on 14 volunteers who underwent a diverse training program after a nightly fast, according to the Science Alert website .
During the experiments, Dr. Kara Anderson, the endocrinologist supervising the study, monitored the levels of the hormone ghrelin, which is responsible for regulating appetite, in the participants’ blood .
The results showed a significant decrease in the levels of this hormone after high-intensity exercise, especially among women participating in the study .
Participants of both genders also reported feeling less hungry after vigorous exercise .
Researchers link these results to the production of lactic acid in the muscles, as there appears to be a certain “threshold” beyond which the body begins to suppress the production of the hormone ghrelin .
The study confirms that exercise above the lactate threshold may be necessary to achieve this effect .
Commenting on the results, Dr. Anderson likened exercise to medicine, stressing that the “dose” should be tailored to each individual’s personal goals .
She added that high-intensity exercise may be an important component of weight-loss programs because of its ability to suppress appetite.
