The Syrian armed opposition announced yesterday morning , Sunday, its control over the Syrian capital and the overthrow of the Bashar al-Assad regime.

The opposition announced in messages what it considered the end of this dark era and the beginning of a new era for Syria.

This comes after a military move by the Syrian opposition 10 days ago, which began with taking control of Aleppo, then all of Idlib, Hama, the southern Syrian provinces, and finally Homs and Damascus.

For its part, the National Transitional Council for Governance in Syria issued Statement No. 1, in which it pledged to commit to building a free, just, and democratic state in which all citizens are equal without discrimination.

The council said that Bashar al-Assad’s regime had fallen and that he had fled the country, leaving behind a legacy of destruction and suffering. The statement added that the council pledged to preserve the unity and sovereignty of Syrian territory, protect citizens and all their property, regardless of their affiliations, and work to rebuild the state and its institutions on the foundations of freedom and justice.

The statement stressed the pursuit of achieving comprehensive national reconciliation and returning refugees and displaced persons to their homes in safety and dignity, stressing the need to hold accountable all those who have committed crimes against the Syrian people, in accordance with law and justice.
