The Iraqi Football Association agreed with Spanish coach Jesus Casas to renew his contract as coach of the national team for the coming period .

A statement from the Football Association stated, “Casas will continue his journey with our national team for a new period, as he will lead our team in the decisive Asian qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup .”

He added, “The President of the Iraqi Football Association, Adnan Darjal, met with the national team coach, Jesús Casas, at the LaLiga headquarters, in the presence of the second vice president of the federation, Younis Mahmoud, and the federation member, Ahmed Al-Moussawi, and during the meeting, they discussed the next stage for the national team, and the pursuit of achieving the desired goals in the entitlements.” The most important of which is the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, where our national team will play two matches in the first and second rounds, against the Oman national team in Basra on 9/5 and against Kuwait on 9/10 in Kuwait .”

Derjal said, according to the statement, “Casas remaining with the national team is an important step in terms of stability in the ranks of our national team. He stressed the importance of the two matches because winning their points will provide a great impetus towards achieving the dream of qualifying for the World Cup .”

The president of the federation added, “The return of Iraq playing its matches between its homeland and its fans after participating in the past competitions will be a good opportunity to watch the Mesopotamian Lions up close amid the warmth of the honorable audience, which is accustomed to reflecting the honorable and bright image .”

He added: “What makes us happy is that Basra is fully prepared to host international matches because it has the elements for success in terms of the quality of the stadiums and the extensive experience it gained as a result of hosting international matches on several occasions, which received praise and admiration from the teams that played their matches in Basra’s stadiums .”
