General Electric Verno Va announced the completion of the construction and operation of 5 transformer and secondary stations for energy transmission, noting that five secondary transformer stations with a voltage of 132 kilovolts have been operated, while Minister Ziad Ali Fadel confirmed that these stations will contribute to improving the stability of the network .
stated in a statement that “today, the project to build and operate five vital transformer and secondary stations across the country in less than two years was completed early,” indicating that “these stations are part of the Ministry of Electricity’s strategy, which includes building and operating 10 secondary stations that will achieve high capacities and availability for the energy transmission sector in cooperation with General Electric Verno Va to improve the stability of high and ultra-high voltage networks, enhance their efficiency, and support electrical interconnection efforts with the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan .”
He added that “the new 132 kV stations, namely Al-Hindiya, Al-Sadr, Al-Qaim Saada, North Baqubah and South Yarmojah, were all delivered ahead of schedule, while the North Baqubah and South Yarmojah stations were delivered about six months ahead of schedule,” noting that “the first station was completed in August, and the second in September 2024, and construction and equipment installation work at the Rusafa Center Transformer Station has reached the final stages and will be operational soon .”
“Four additional stations, North Najaf, North Karbala, North Diwaniyah, and Oreido, are scheduled to be completed and operational before the summer of 2025,” he continued, explaining, “Upon completion of the ten stations mentioned, the Iraqi electricity grid will be able to transmit an additional 2,200 MVA of energy, which will improve transmission for about 300,000 homes or about one million people .”
“Over the past decade, GE Verno Va has built and operated 30 transformer stations across Iraq, including five 400 kV super-high voltage stations in Khairat, Nineveh, Mansouriya, eastern Mosul, Al-Faw, and northwest Baghdad,” he said, explaining that “as part of GE ’s solid and certified global work , four 132 kV substations have been completed in Dohuk Governorate for the Kurdistan Region, which will contribute to strengthening the electrical infrastructure in Iraq .”
stressed that “the strategic partnership with solid companies, including General Electric Verno Va , represents support for the ministry’s efforts to modernize the national electricity grid by enhancing the efficiency of generation and transmission and drawing a reliable technical map that adds flexibility and maneuverability in transferring loads and achieving solidity in linking the governorates together .”
“These five transformer stations, which were completed and commissioned ahead of schedule, are an important addition to our efforts as they directly contribute to improving the stability of the grid in the surrounding areas and are essential to meet the growing demand for electricity,” he said, stressing that “the completion of these complex projects ahead of schedule reflects the commitment of the Ministry of Electricity teams and their focus on achieving tangible results .”
cooperation with the Ministry , our advanced solutions for the installed stations not only contribute to the stability of the grid, but also accelerate Iraq ’s transition to a more efficient and sustainable future ,” said Johan Bendel , President of GE’s Grid Systems Integration Sector, Vernouva .
“ As a committed and long – term partner in Iraq’s energy sector, we are determined to meet the growing energy needs of the Iraqi economy through the latest technologies and solutions in various aspects of power generation and transmission,” said Rashid Al Janabi, President of GE Vernouva in Iraq . “ This new achievement represents an important step in the process of modernizing the national electricity grid, which is an important part of a comprehensive strategy developed by the company to support Iraq ’s energy transformation and provide more electricity while reducing carbon intensity.” He pointed out that “we are proud of the pivotal role played by Iraqi cadres from the Ministry of Electricity and GE Vernouva in these projects .”
In addition to modernizing the national electricity grid, GE Verno Va has added 19,000 megawatts of generating capacity over the past decade, and has facilitated Iraq’s access to more than $3 billion in financing to support energy projects since 2015. The company continues to train national cadres, build local capabilities, and establish advanced control centers according to updated international specifications that can diagnose and sense symptoms on generating units before they occur to protect the national system .
