The New York State Parks Department announced The wildfires were out of control due to the stormy weather, and emergency officials rushed to a voluntary evacuation in an area near the New York-New Jersey border .

The voluntary evacuation, which was implemented as a precaution, included about 165 homes in Warwick, New York, while firefighters continued to work to extinguish the Jennings Creek wildfire , said Jeff Wernick, a spokesman for the Parks Department.

Officials said wildfires in Passaic County, New Jersey, along the border, were 90 percent contained, and in Orange County, New York, about 70 percent contained .

Wildfires have burned about 15 square kilometers across the two states, but New York officials said that number was likely to rise as stronger winds were expected early in the week .

New York Army National Guard helicopters dropped 79,493 gallons of water, and a New York State Police helicopter dropped nearly 3,406 gallons, Wernick said .

The fire was primarily burning in Sterling Forest State Park, where the visitor center, the lakefront area at Greenwood Lake and the historic furnace area remained open, but forest activities, including hunting, were halted, Wernick said, noting that homes around the lake were not affected.
