On Sunday, the former head of the local council of Al-Azim district, north of Diyala Governorate, Muhammad Dhaifan Al-Ubaidi, warned of an agricultural disaster that threatens thousands of farmers, as he described it .
Al-Ubaidi said, “Al-Azim district, which is one of the most prominent and largest agricultural areas in Diyala and Iraq, is not included in the plan of the Ministries of Agriculture and Water Resources to grow wheat this season, even though it includes more than 40 thousand dunams and produces thousands of tons of the crop annually .”
He added that “the district was not included in the plan under the pretext of not having enough water for irrigation, but the situation has now changed as a result of the rains during the past hours after large quantities of water and floods flowed into the Al-Azim Dam and increased its storage,” noting that “the rains were considered a complete irrigation for farmers, and Al-Azim must be included in the plan to support its farmers .”
Al-Obaidi pointed out that “keeping the situation as it is means an economic disaster will occur in the district, with thousands of farmers as victims,” calling on the Prime Minister and the Ministers of Agriculture and Water Resources to “intervene urgently to save the reality of agriculture and farmers in Al-Azim district.”
