The Agriculture Department in Sinuni District, Sinjar District, Nineveh Governorate, announced yesterday , Sunday, that thousands of fig trees had been damaged due to water scarcity and chemical emissions from a cement factory .
Director of Agriculture Barakat Issa said: “More than 6,000 fig trees have been damaged due to water shortages and scarcity of rain over the past years, in addition to damage caused by smoke and chemicals emanating from the cement factory located east of the district .”
He added, “Sinjar district is one of the most prominent areas in Iraq in fig cultivation, as it contains more than 90,000 trees that produce about 90 tons of fresh and dried figs annually .”
Issa called on the federal government to take “urgent measures to address the drought crisis by drilling new wells in the region with the aim of preserving the agricultural sector in general and fig cultivation in particular, given the great importance of this crop to the region.”
